From desert, and rolling hills to snow topped mountains, the area is paradise to outdoor enthusiasts. There are seventy-five lakes and over 1500 maintained hike/bike trails within an hour of Spokane. Multiple ski slopes, lush forests, state parkland and river rapids are all within two hours of the city. Within Spokane proper the thirty seven-mile Centennial Trail runs from Nine-Mile Falls to the Idaho State line and provides a wide paved trail for all ages, abilities and sports. Roller blades, bikes, wheelchairs and strollers all enjoy the trail, which runs alongside the Spokane River. World-class golf is available in Spokane on several courses.

Winter sports are plentiful in the area with Nordic, cross-country and downhill skiing all readily available. Snowmobiling, ice-skating and horseback riding are enjoyed as is hiking, biking and camping in the region’s many open spaces, state parks and resort areas. Paddling the Spokane River is popular and canoes and kayaks can put in right in the Peaceful Valley neighborhood and zoom past a nude sunbathing beach. Equipment for all area sports can be rented locally and guides are available.

Spokane also boasts a Symphony Orchestra that has dazzled audiences for fifty years, the oldest performing Jazz Orchestra in the United States, and an Opera House that hosts a variety of shows all season.
